Masayuki Sase’s photographs are set on journeys filled with mixtures of prayer and sadness. These remote places retain the unique culture of the Jomon era, and to this day their people still pray for peaceful lives and the souls of those who have died in endless cycles of invasions and coups. Sase’s photographs capture these places’ undercurrents of pure, original prayer passed down from ancient times.
