This event has ended.

Nagoya, Japan’s third largest city, saw a series of skyscrapers built during a period of economic robustness, and these buildings have become emblematic of the city’s Tokaichi Ward. At the same time, Tokaichi’s original buildings that remain amid the city’s development have a distinctly Showa-esque atmosphere. For the past several years, the photographer Kurato has wandered these nostalgic streets on days off, camera in hand, and invariably comes across cats. “Its not so much that the cats are part of the town, it’s more that the town is part of the cats,” Kurato says. This collection of 35 black and white photographs taken over the past five years preserve the memories of cats in a neighborhood that is disappearing amid a city’s transformation.
