Handmade traditional crafts possess a warmth that cannot be replicated with machine production. It has been 40 years since the establishment of the “Law for the Promotion of Traditional Crafts Industries”, and today there are 218 types of traditional crafts officially recognized by the Japanese government. Seventeen of these originate in Kyoto, more than any other area in the country. Kyoto’s traditional craft industries remain closely linked to industrial development, tourism, and cultural enterprises. This exhibition offers a fresh look at Kyoto’s traditional crafts officially recognized by the city and national governments and explains their five selection criteria.
