The Ohotsuku region of eastern Hokkaido is unique within Japan for its blending of Jomon, Ohotsuku, and Ainu cultures. During the Meiji period, its landscape was transformed into one of cultivated fields as settlers moved in and cut down its primeval forests and wilderness through backbreaking labor. Ohotsuku’s Shiretoko Peninsula, a registered World Heritage site, is also known for the outstanding the scenic beauty of its quasi-national parks. Of all the splendors of Ohotsuku’s four seasons, its ice floes visible in winter are perhaps the most unique. Black and white photographs capturing the area’s nature are on display.
