From rice bowls to tea cups, pottery is an integral part of Japanese life, perhaps more so than in any other country. Different regions throughout Japan have developed their own special forms of ceramic arts, and there are great variations within these kinds of pottery. In 2008, eight Japanese art and historical museums in pottery-producing areas that expertly collect and exhibit works of pottery formed the Japan Ceramics Network. This organization now presents “What is Pottery,” an exhibition showcasing the wonders of ceramic arts. It introduces masterpieces from all eight museums, exploring themes of how these works were made, how they are used, and what they represent.
