This monthly contest is held by Nippon Camera, a magazine established in 1950. A famous photographer acts as the judge for the year, announcing the winners in each issue and calculating the points awarded each month to determine an annual prize winner.

The contest consists of four categories: monochrome prints, color slides, color prints, and beginners. Apart from the “beginners” category, contestants must average a certain score each month throughout the year to win the top prizes. The winning entries are very high-level works, making this contest one of the top in Japanese amateur photography. This year over 80,000 photos were sent in. Representative winners from each category are on display.
