The traditional sweets of Kyoto fulfill a variety of cultural roles. These sweets made by Sayoko Sugiyama, of the popular Japanese sweets shop Okashimaru, and Sotatsu Ota, a researcher of Kyoto’s culinary culture and maker of tea and sweets, are imbued with prayers containing hints for contemporary life.
