Sand is a key component of concrete, needed to create the high rise buildings and infrastructure of the capital, and to reclaim land around the Tokyo bay area. Its use came to a peak in the late 1960s, and through its use in various construction developments its has contributed to the convenience and richness of our everyday lives. However as a result of digging for sand in in-land areas of Chiba, a former hill range of 204m high has been completely destroyed around the city of Futsushi, with numerous other areas being subject to such mining, leading to loss of forest regions and various other environmental affects. Yoshinori Matsuno reflects upon this condition in a series of color photographs.
