The World Seen Through Ken Noguchi’s Eyes— An Alpinist’s Photos of the Himalayas, Africa, and Japan

Photographer’s statement: What this exhibit most wants to show is the world of “places”. Whether the summits of the Himalayas, Africa, or the disaster-stricken areas of Japan, I believe all places have an “A” and a “B” side. If the A side is the beautiful world viewed at quick glance, the B side is what we can only see by immersing ourselves in the place. Sometimes the B side is harsh enough to make us want to avert our eyes. People tend to only want to see the A side, but to truly know a place, an understanding of both is necessary. To me, the most important thing is the act of “seeing”, because to see is to know and to therefore shoulder responsibility. Divided into the segments “The Himalayas”, “Africa”, “Collected Remains”, and “The Tohoku Disaster Area”, this exhibition presents photographs that convey a more real perspective on the world observed from its foremost front lines. This is my first photo exhibition, an attempt to start something new, and I hope it will be of meaning to you.
