The custom of smoking is said to have been introduced to the Japanese by Westerners (the Portuguese) during the second half of the 16th century. Although initially the pipe was large in size, it was downsized for portability, resulting in popularity for tobacco pouches in both men and women. During the Edo period, weapons were frequently used as objects of ostentation, indicating wealth and social status. Since only samurai were allowed to carry weapons, an elaborate Japanese pipe slung from the waist served a similar purpose.
Stylish smoking paraphernalia from the latter half of the Edo period to the early Showa period are on display.
