A true photographic witness to the 20th century, Marc Riboud was present at many of its defining events, from the African independence movements of the 1950s to the Vietnam War in the 1960s. In 1957 he succeeded in becoming one of the first Western photographers to capture scenes from a young Communist China. In recent years, his reputation has been further enhanced by high-profile retrospective exhibitions at the International Photography Center (ICP) in New York and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris. This standout exhibition presents around 50 previously unshown works taken in Alaska in the 1950’s, during the ‘forgotten age’ lasting for the brief period between the Gold Rush and the discovery of oil. The images cast a sharp but distinctively lyrical eye on scenes of human and animal coexistence with nature and other facets of the artist’s encounter with the region.
* This exhibition is part of the Kyotographie International Photography Festival.
