This event has ended.

Julia Baier visited Japan in 2005, presenting the series “The Public Bath,” which brought her wide recognition for the first time outside of Europe. Traveling to pools and public baths across regions of Europe, she clearly captured the instantaneous expressions and gestures of people by the water in works that brought fresh and sensational ideas to the world of photography. During her 2008 stay in Japan, Baier gathered images for the series “Sento” to be published as a book in Germany. These works are highly regarded for distinctly bringing to mind the spirituality of the Japanese people closely tied to the concept of the public bath.
The published photo series “Water Matters” (2013) contains works taken after 2000 that show the various ways Baier’s eye has captured scenes of water. Some of these images were selected for “Augen auf,” a large exhibition commemorating 100 years of Leica photography that toured European cities such as Deichtorhallen and Hamburg.
Baier’s exhibition with Gallery Out of Place introduces nearly 15 works from “Water Matters.” Additionally, a number of photos taken during her stay in Iceland this spring will be displayed for the first time.
