This event has ended.

Ayako Miyawaki is a unique artist who employed appliqué techniques to create poetic works of art modeled on familiar objects such as fish, vegetables and plants. After the War, she “wanted to use her time to do some sort of work for herself”, and she came upon appliqué, using old fabric that was close to hand. Her creations make the most of the qualities of the material, have the three-dimensional presence of still-life paintings and a timeless design appeal, whilst still managing to be humorous, warm and vibrant at the same time. Her works, spun by hand, can certainly be described as “The appliqué art of painting by cloth”, replacing traditional paints with fabric.
Based on the themes of “love of nature” and “love of family and people”, this exhibition introduces guests to around 100 of her creations, from her earliest works, her masterpieces and hereto unseen pieces. Viewers are invited to sample the world of Ayako Miyawaki, whose energy for creation was fuelled by her love for her family.
