Satoshi Hirano’s photographs of the reconstruction of Shibuya Station, to be completed in 2027 as urban development project of a scale said to occur only once in 50 to 100 years. Hirano’s images reflect both the ideals of modernism and a post-modernist skepticism, a documentary-like realism and digital processing, conceptual rigor and spontaneous observation, originality and reproduction, and the deconstruction and reconstruction of images themselves. These seemingly contradictory workings are a chance to reconsider modern photography.
