Fuji Photo Gallery Osaka

poster for Stirling Elmendorf “Taisho Power”

This event has ended.

Featuring photography by Stirling Elmendorf, a commercial architecture and design photographer living and working in Japan.
Taisho Ward is a small island located in Osaka and a home to a wide range of industries- from weaving steel rope to complex electronics. Taisho Power started over a year ago- in the office of a factory president in the Taisho Ward of Osaka who invited Stirling Elmendorf to photograph the workers in his factory and the process that it took to create their products. Then began a whirlwind tour of a variety of factories throughout Taisho, documenting the human skills and the machines that collaborate together in production. Within the grease, the smoke and the fire of the factories, the grinding, pounding and forging- the common thread that emerged was the power of Taisho, a small island within Osaka that creates with pride.
Recording sounds at many of the factories, these samples will accompany the show as an original score, to bring another dimension to the viewer. This exhibition is a small view into this incredible world and will help people to appreciate what happens behind the scenes in the world of industry.
