This event has ended.

The Kyoto International Manga Museum looks back on the 38-year career of manga artist Hisashi Eguchi, who brought innovation to the gag-manga genre in works such as his 1977 debut series “Susume!! Pirates” and his 1981 smash hit “Stop!! Hibari-kun!” Building on this success, Eguchi branched out into illustration, displaying a unique pop style of spare lines and three-dimensionality and an outstanding eye for design. The influence of his diverse, category-transcending art on the wider subculture cannot be overstated.

Last year’s publication of “King of Pop: The Complete Illustrations of Hisashi Eguchi” by Genkosha marked the beginning of a the nation-wide tour of the exhibition “Hisashi Eguchi: King of Pop.” In addition to the illustrations featured in the traveling exhibition, this Kyoto edition presents a selection of works from “King of Pop: Side B,” an Eguchi retrospective held at Meiji University’s Yoshihoro Yonezawa Memorial Library of Manga and Subculture. More than 300 of Eguchi’s original drawings are on display.
