The magical island of Yakushima is registered as a natural World Heritage Site. The Yaku Sugi and Jomon Sugi are well known cedar trees that are estimated to be over 7200 years old, however they are surrounded by other anonymous trees and plants that give life to the forest which is home to wild monkeys and deer. The deep forest of Yakushima is nurtured by the rain and known to be the region with the highest rainfall in Japan, it is said to “rain for 35 days a month” according to Fumiko Hayashi’s novel “Ukigumo” (“The Floating Clouds”). Due to this, the vegetation is plentiful and the island is covered in green. The rain is considered a blessing.
This exhibition by Han Byung Ha, aptly named “Forest Rain” presents black and white photographs that pay homage to the rain of Yakushima.
