This event has ended.

This exhibition by 2016 Canon Calendar photographer Naoki Ishikawa features images of “marebito” (literally, “rare people”), a term ethnologist Shinobu Orikuchi used to refer to the unusual spirits or gods said to visit the villages of Japanese islands during festivals or other special ceremonies. Just who or what are these “visiting spirits” appearing on the shores of the Japanese archipelago? Taken over the past ten years of fieldwork on islands across Japan, Naoki Ishikawa’s photographs of masks used in such ceremonies pursue an unexamined wildness within the human heart.
