Called the God of the Leica, Ihei Kimura pioneered a new style of expression that came to be known as snapshot photography combining prevalent pictoral styles with a sense of movement. His original perspective shines in photographs of life in Tokyo’s Shitamachi neighborhoods, Akita’s farming villages, and in his portraits of famous people. To Kimura, the camera was not merely an “eye,” but a device for looking more deeply at a subject, and this approach gives his works a profound fascination and mature feeling of humanity. On display is a selection of 60 outstanding works from the museum’s Kimura collection, organized into themes of “Before and After the War,” “Plebian Towns,” “The Japanese Islands,” “People,” and “Akita.”
