Kachoga Appreciation

Egawa Museum

This event has ended.

Plants and animals have been important motifs in artwork since ancient times. Reflecting heightened interest in natural history, kachoga (bird and flower paintings) of the Edo period ushered in photo-realism as new artistic concept. Kachoga were also influenced by the diverse expressions of Chinese painting, including the Southern school bunjinga literati paintings. This exhibition celebrates the New Year with vibrant kachoga works, also displaying paintings featuring this year’s Zodiac animal, the monkey.
