Shigeru Izumi “How to Make a Handsome Painting”
The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama
This event has ended.
Shigeru Izumi (1922-1995), who formed the avant-garde art group Democratic Artists Association with Ei-Q in 1951, was almost entirely self-taught as an etching and lithograph artist after graduating from the Osaka City Kogei High School in 1939. Still, he received the New Comer Award at the first International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo in 1957, attracting attention with the poetic style and outstanding expressions of his prints. He then spent approximately a decade in New York and Paris broadening his practice from prints to oil paintings, creating works that emphasized discovery over pursuit. He resumed his printmaking after returning to Japan with a further-evolved style of distinct geometrical patterns detached from literary elements. This exhibition introduces the paintings of this Kansai postwar contemporary artist.
