Since winning the 2012 New Cosmos of Photography Award, Shingo Kakita has switched his focus from technical skill to “the compositional limits of photographs as photographs.” He began using only an iPhone and scanner to print screen shots of junk mail, which he over-manipulates and strips down to produce images with a violent appeal. His intellectually bold works can be read as interventions into the history of photography. Focusing on Kakita’s “8” series of scanned iPhone photography, this exhibition of new works showcases the cutting-edge philosophy of his optical abstraction.
