Yusho Kaiho (1533–1615) was a master of the Momoyama School of painting along with the likes of Eitoku Kano and Tohaku Hasegawa. Kaiho was born into a family of vassals for the Omi Asai domain in western Japan and spent his youth at Tofuku-ji temple. When his lord and older brother were killed by daimyo Nobunaga Oda, Kaiho returned to civic life and began training as a Kanno school painter. Most of his surviving works are from age 60 and after, once he had already established his independence from the Kanno school. His inimitable works include ink paintings featuring, skillful, powerful brushstrokes and lyrical gold-inlaid mineral pigment yamato-e paintings. Kaiho continued to paint up until his death at age 83, and this exhibition tracing his career through his last years offers a look at the world of this last master of Momoyama painting.
