Masao Obata started to paint at the age of 50. Working in social welfare in Kobe, Obata spent his nights painting onto cardboard that he had collected and cut to desired size. Painted were family scenes and weddings, buses and trains, tanks and warships, as well as desired luxury items and musical instruments, all accompanied by the aspirations, hopes, and anxieties resulting from the hardships of his life so far.
