13th Nakanojo Film Theater: An Invitation to Extreme Private Cinema presents feature-length films by three directors. If art is a form of self-expression, the experiences and thinking of the artist become an important parts of this expression. Yet since the age of Edison and the Lumiere Brothers, cinema has struggled with the extent to which it should reflect subjective demands as it has grown into a widespread attraction. This discrepancy is always right before us when we considerfilm as an art form. Examining the fact that extremely private things are shared openly as works of cinema, this even focuses on the films of poet and filmmaker Shiroyasu Suzuki, inventor of the term “extreme private.” The films introduced differ in their methodologies, but all deal with private matters of their creators, in effect putting cinema back in the hands of the artist.
