This event has ended.

Until now, Toshinori Uyama has presented works which depict scenery from business hotels “through a window,” calling our attention to things that, though they are visible, are easily overlooked. With his “Ver.” series which refers to the word “version,” Uyama worked with a concept that encompasses interpretation, opinion, heteromorphy, deformation, translation and conversion, providing a different sort of visual encounter with “scenery” and introducing a new interpretation of space.
This new work, “White Study” capture the smoke, fog, clouds and artificial steam of a volcano. By avoiding narrative or clarity, Uyama conveys a powerful visual that does not evoke stories of any kind. Rather, by substituting photographs for the places themselves, he brings about a mode of visual perception that deviates from both the idea of “landscape,” based on interpretations and substitutions, and the natural-scientific perspective usually applied to phenomena such as volcanic craters. His photographs leave us with many more impressions and interpretations than they initially seem to contain.
