Tatsuo Hata is known for his photographs of Japan’s Shinshu region, but ultimately his work came to focus on people – specifically the humanity he glimpsed in Shinshu artisans’ processes of creation. These images capture master creators of mizuhiki cords, washi paper, sake, bamboo craft, fireworks, and more as they work while tangibly evoking their charming smiles, skill, and the sights and sounds of their studios.
