In 特集記事 by Chisai Fujita 2016-04-13

Hong Kong is still one of the most important city as a contemporary art scene. When I have arrived in Hong Kong International Airport, I saw the sign “Hong Kong Art month”. You might be find “Art Basel Hong Kong” on other website. I will introduce “Hong Kong Art Now”.

Art Fair /

1.Art Basel in Hong Kong /

In 2016, “Art Basel in Hong Kong” opened. It is known as the biggest art fair in Asia, I saw many Japanese there. From Japanese galleries, Michio Yoshihara / Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery, Kimiyo Mishima / MEM, Yuki Hayashi (film section) / Gallery Yamaki Fine Art, Keiji Uematsu (Encounters section) / Yumiko Chiba Associates. The exhibitions of Japanese galleries show specific aspects that have only been before in Japanese artworks.

2.ART CENTRAL

“ART CENTRAL”, which started last year has new expanded its space by 25%. Many people come there though there is far from station and it is not known than Art Basel. The representatives from Japan are the exhibitions of Kazumi Nakamura and Satoru Tamura from Tezukayama Gallery. Abstract paintings like Nakamura are rare in the ART CENTRAL exhibition, but people are interested.

3.Asia Contemporary Art Show

Asia Contemporary Art Show, Art at Linden gate from Australiaは、香港とシンガポールで展開するアートフェアである。

“Asia Contemporary Art Show” where opened Conrad Hong Kong is another type art fair. Because it was held in the hotel, customers choose the artworks closely. And the gallerist talk various things about the art works. Actually, it is good that I can hear the explanation for Australian gallery. Also price is not expensive, it is easy to purchase the artworks there.

Gallery /

2-1. Increasing the galleries from Europe /

2-1-1. Massimo De Carlo

Pedder Building from Central area has a gallery, Massimo De Carlo. This gallery from Milan, Italy chooses Hong Kong because it is convenient to travel to any Asian countries from here. The gallerist, Mr. De Carlo said, “it takes two hours from here to almost Asian country, therefore customers come to Hong Kong and they can see and buy the artworks easily. Japan, however is a little further east”.

2-1-2. CHARBON

CHARBON is opened at Wong Chuk Hang (黄竹坑)area since September, 2015. French manager found this space for the gallery. Manager / Curator, Ms. Choffel said “In this last few years, the number of galleries has increased around here. When the customers come to this area, they should come to my gallery.

2-2. Connecting in South Area / South Area

In Wang Chuk Hang(黄竹坑) and Tin Wan (田湾)area, galleries and artist studios open the event “ART BRANCH” on March 24. The viewers can admire the artworks, eat and drink all in all it is good project.

Others / その他

3-1. Event Horizon

Antony Gormley who is one of the most famous sculptors in the world has a new project in Hong Kong. His sculptures represent isolated life-size standing men. 3 sculptures are placed on the street and 28 sculptures are on the top of the building in Central area. You want to see it when the viewer can look up the building. In Japan, we say like this, “artwork changes the environment (space) because it has a spatial coercion to it”. Perhaps we can discover the symbol behind it. But in Hong Kong, “art is art and you are you”. You are aware it when you are admiring an artwork. You can look up or horizontally if you are on top of a hill and you will see the same thing, no symbol, just art. Actually, Gormley’s sculptures provide an example of greatness in art.

3-2. M+, SIGG collection

For the opening 2019, the museum “M+” presents the SIGG collection, which is a Chinese exhibition of contemporary artists. In this exhibition, we can see the artworks with their history (1974 – present).

3-3. 「Post Pixel」

There are many universities in Hong Kong have art divisions, one of them is City University of Hong Kong which hosts Post Pixel exhibition in the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre. As the title suggests, the artists try to show their visions about the “pixel” throughout their video or photo. This is biennale exhibition and after Hong Kong it will be hosted in Daegu, South Korea and Shanghai, China.

Wherever you come to Hong Kong, you can see and buy artworks. Is it true? We Japanese have  many museums (each prefecture has a museum), and art events open in every city in Japan. Due to the education we receive (we learn how to see and understand artworks) and the workshops we have (we learn how to create artworks), we are able to grasp the sense of art. In Hong Kong, the situation is different. Despite the lack of art education and workshops, citizen line up for more than 40minutes sometimes to see M+ museum’s collection or visiting art fairs. In Japan’s case people do not line up for seeing foreign artworks, but they do appreciate Japanese art. I think Japanese consciousness has to adapt and global view is necessary. Who appreciates Japanese art? It might take a while for the conception to change and will have to give it time to see the results.
