"Frog Painter Hoji Matsumoto and the Modern Osaka Painting Circles" Exhibition

Hoji Matsumoto (unknown-1800) lived and worked as a picture framer in Osaka during the late Edo period. He enjoyed having pet frogs and collecting frog-motif ornaments and painting them. His frog paintings have a dynamic composition with vigorous brush stokes and have adorable facial expressions that bring intimacy to the viewer.
In addition to frogs, Matsumoto also collected distinguished artwork. He asked calligraphers, painters, and literary figures to paint for him and eventually produced high quality art albums. His passion towards collecting resulted in establishing friendship with first-class artists.
This exhibition features about 40 works including a some which have been influenced by Jakuchu Ito (1716-1800).
