Between the Heian era to the Edo era many symbols appeared on the back of hand mirrors with intricate designs of landscapes, plants and birds of Japan. In particular images of pine clutching cranes and Chrysanthemum, Horai and Sumiyoshi images, were given symbolic importance in bringing marital harmony and long life, reflecting the beliefs and aesthetics of an era. In addition to Kurokawa Institute of Ancient Cultures collection this exhibition also draws on the collections of the Kyoto National Museum, Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts, Izumi and Museum Yamato Bunkakan to showacase an overview of these mirrors and present the latest research in the field.
