This event has ended.

The lotus, indigenous to India, has always been close to the hearts of the people of East Asia for growing amid muddy ground and opening its serene, elegant flower. It disseminated throughout the world along with the spread of Buddhism and decorated various paintings and craft works as a form of prayer. Also adopted as an auspicious symbol, it can represent richness in life as well as love between men and women. The lotus also symbolizes the “man of virtue” embodiment of the ideal of Confucianism. This exhibition sheds light on the various lotus motifs decorating the ceramics of East Asia. Through the 64 works of art from the museum collection, viewers can appreciate the serene beauty of the flower as well as the modest wishes of the common people expressed in each motif. The exhibition features about 50 photographs of lotus flowers by Mr. Tomohiro Muda, an active photographer whose works are based on the theme “Spaces for Prayer, Forms of Prayer”. Visitors can explore the charm of the lotus from the aspects of both Oriental ceramics and the eyes of a modern photographer.
