Makie is a distinctly Japanese method of lacquer decoration. Images are painted with the sap of a lacquer tree, onto which gold dust, silver dust, or crushed-shell powders are sprinkled. After drying, the surfaces are polished with charcoal, bringing out the object’s luster. The art form flourished during the Edo period, when makie artists decorated the furniture and marital belongings of the daughters of shoguns, daimyos, and other high-ranking families. This exhibition presents several large items decorated with makie, including a writing table, an inkstone box, and a document box.
