This event has ended.

Born in Akita Prefecture, Toyoshiro Fukuda (1904-1970) became one of the most famous Japanese-style painters of the Showa era. A student of two innovative painters—Ryushi Kawabata of Tokyo and Bakusen Tsuchida of Kyoto— Fukuda became a great success at a young age. To develop his own style, he tackled issues of color, line, and perspective, an effort that earned him his reputation as a pioneer of new Japanese-style painting. All the while his hometown remained firmly in his mind, and he painted many Akita scenes. Nostalgic yet innovative, his works continue to fascinate. As 2014 marks the 110th anniversary of Fukuda’s birth, this retrospective showcases several of his masterpieces, drawings, and studies with the full cooperation of the Akita Museum of Modern Art.
