Koyasan and Niutsuhime Shrine

Koyasan is home to an active monastic center founded 1,200 years ago by the great monk Kukai for the study and practice of Esoteric Shingon Buddhism, a faith with a wide following throughout Japan. 117 temples scatter within Koyasan, which include the pilgrimage routes that have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The enshrined deities within Niutsuhime Shrine are known as the guardians of Koyasan since its foundation. Admitted as the origin of Japanese traditions of faith in both Shinto and Buddhism, it was registered also as a World Heritage Site. This exhibition traces the history of the relationship between Koyasan and Niutsuhime Shrine.
