Haruo Ohara (1909～1999) was a farmer, photographer and Japanese immigrant who has garnered acclaim in Brazil for his photographs of landscapes, family life, and the changing face of his town of Londrina. Ohara was born in 1909 and at the age of 17 immigrated to Brazil, where he first lived with his family in Sao Paulo. Purchasing his first small camera at the age of 28, Ohara began enjoying taking photographs as an amateur. In his careful, gentle photographs, Ohara captures scenes of his beloved family, as well as their daily lives on the extensive farm that they created from nothing after their arrival in Brazil. Ohara’s photography echoes the universal hymn to nature and humanity that rings out of every human heart. On display are 180 monochrome photos from the Instituto Moreira Salles Collections.
